There were to have been eight boats in the class, but when the first two were ordered from Normand on 4 November 1905 it was realised that two units of the Claymore class assigned to Rochefort (M’42–43) had yet to be laid down, and these were therefore built to the new plans. Three further pairs of boats were contracted from private shipbuilders on 8 November.

They were designed for 28 knots, but given the increase in displacement resulting from the larger hull, a ministerial directive of 8 October 1907 revised this downwards to 27.5 knots. Branlebas attained 28.76 knots with 6,700cv at 303rpm, and Fanfare 28.91 knots with 6,560cv at 298rpm; the fastest was the Penhoët-built Sape, which made 29.82 knots at 300rpm.

The Branlebas class had the same raised bridge with the searchlight projector atop the pilot house. The S/L projector was a larger model: 60cm vs the 40cm of earlier ships. The raised forecastle gave them good sea-keeping qualities, although the increase in topweight resulted in a prominent roll with a beam sea. The class had an axial keel 35m long and 0.5m deep, as in the earlier boats, but no bilge keels. With the wind three quarters on the bow they could easily sustain 12 knots in heavy seas even during wartime (as noted in a 1915 report); however by this time displacement was around 400 tonnes, with adverse consequences for stability.
